Essence Drain and Contagion feel different from most spell setups in Path of Exile 2. You are not trying to stand still and fire at every monster in a pack. You tag the pack, land Essence Drain on something likely to die first, then keep moving while the damage does its work. That rhythm is why Gemling Legionnaire is such a comfortable choice for mapping in Patch 0.5. It also scales well when you're ready to put more into it, though you don't need perfect gear on day one. A sensible stash of POE 2 Currency helps a lot, especially when it's time to improve your weapon, gem levels, or defensive slots instead of replacing every item after a few maps.
How the Clear Actually Feels
The basic play pattern is easy to pick up, but there's a little timing to it. Start with Contagion when you see a dense group. Then fire Essence Drain into a target near the middle or into a tougher monster that won't fall over instantly. Once the first enemy dies, the damage can move through the pack and clear space behind you. In open maps, this can feel almost effortless. In tighter layouts, you may need a second cast of Contagion to catch enemies around corners. Don't rush back into the pack to watch every kill happen. Cast, step away, and let the damage spread. That's the point. Against rare enemies, keep Essence Drain active and use your movement skill to stay out of danger. The build rewards patience more than frantic casting.
Gemling Priorities and Passive Choices
Gemling Legionnaire works nicely here because the class gives you room to get more value from your skill gems and build around their requirements. Early on, gem levels matter more than players sometimes expect. A level increase on Essence Drain can beat several smaller spell-damage rolls, so don't overlook it just because the item itself looks plain. On the passive tree, look for chaos damage, damage over time multiplier, spell damage, cast speed, and enough mana support to keep the rotation smooth. Defences need attention too. Life or Energy Shield, elemental resistances, and recovery are not optional once map damage starts climbing. It's tempting to grab every damage node nearby, but a character that has to stop and reset after every dangerous pack loses the main advantage of this setup. You want to keep moving through the map at a steady pace.
Gear That Makes a Noticeable Difference
Your weapon is usually the first slot worth serious investment. A wand or staff with added levels to chaos or spell gems can change the feel of boss fights straight away. After that, chaos damage over time multiplier, spell damage, and cast speed are all useful. Cast speed is especially nice because it makes Contagion and Essence Drain feel less clunky when a pack is already closing in. Armour pieces should cover the less exciting jobs: resistances, Life or Energy Shield, and any useful recovery. Rings and amulets can carry a lot of value as well, particularly when they add gem levels or damage over time scaling without leaving your defences exposed. For support gems, think about what is slowing you down. If maps feel awkward, more area or faster casting may help. If bosses take too long, favour duration and stronger damage scaling on Essence Drain. There isn't one fixed answer for every stage of progression.
Boss Fights and Farming Routes
On bosses, this isn't a burst setup, and that's fine. The safer approach is to apply Essence Drain, refresh it before it drops, and spend the rest of the fight watching the arena. Contagion has less impact when there are no extra enemies around, yet it can still be useful when adds appear or when your chosen setup benefits from it. The key is not to trade hits just because the boss is low. Keep your distance, circle around dangerous ground effects, and let the damage tick. For farming, the build shines in content with packed screens and frequent groups of enemies. Dense maps, Expedition-style encounters, and other monster-heavy activities suit it well. You'll quickly notice that layout matters. Long corridors can slow spread, while broad packs in open areas disappear much faster. Pick content that lets the build do what it does best rather than forcing it into cramped encounters every session.
Final Thoughts
Gemling ED Contagion is a strong pick for players who want a calmer, ranged approach without giving up map speed. It has a clear upgrade path, it handles crowded content well, and it gives you time to react during difficult fights. Start by improving gem levels and your weapon, then fill out defences before chasing every last damage modifier. When you're looking through Path of Exile 2 Items for sale, focus on upgrades that solve a real problem in your current setup, whether that is weak resistances, low Energy Shield, slow casting, or poor boss damage. That practical approach keeps the character feeling good as your maps get harder.
